Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; CUWCD newsletter CUP to pick up lions share of funding washington AP the interior departments proposal to accelerate a few western water projects and delay most others runs the risk that the delayed projects will be abandoned even though that is not the departments intent interior secretary donald P hodel said testifying before a senate subcommittee hodel said the fact that the completion of the accelerated projects would release money for others was the best guarantee that the others would be completed we will have money available there is no other assurance that I 1 am aware of hodel told the energy and water development subcommittee of the senate appropriations committee hodels dodels budget request for the fiscal year beginning oct 1 calls for a 98 million increase in construction st funds for the bureau of reclamation to 700 million but the bulk of the money would go toward completing two projects the central arizona project and the central utah WWI vt t project and the bureaus program of safety improvements this would be a major change from past practice if approved upto ulto up to now the bureau and congress have collaborated in keeping many projects alive to spread the political benefits around but with little work being done on each project house committees however have refused to let the department stop planning work in the current fiscal year for the 58 projects that are to be delayed safe water act the new federal safe water act will have a tremendous impact on every water system in the nation robert B hilbert chairman of the utah safe drinking water committee told water system operators and city officials recently hilbert and other members of his committee conducted an open forum at the rural water association of utahs sixth annual convention at the excelsior hotel in provo its going to require more monitoring and it will be expensive hilbert emphasized the act anticipates 25 or more contaminants will be added to the testing program each year after 1989 the safe drinking water act was passed originally in 1974 and sweeping new amendments were signed into law in june 1986 by president ronald reagan EPA is now preparing regulations to implement the law and these should be ready by june of this year according to joe sarcone environmental scientist with region 8 of the EPA ziz RIZ he noted however that water utility operators will have 18 months to implement the new regulations sampling will begin this year he said some of the authorities in washington expect water bills to increase to more that 550 per year for a family regulations will come from EPA to the safe drinking water committee and they will tell the water utilities what is required he reported reclamation awards contract for drainage and seepage control on navajo dam A 65 6.5 65 million contract for the construction of the navajo dam drainage and seepage control right abutment drainage tunnel was awarded by the bureau of reclamation according to interior secretary donald hodel frontier kemper construction inc of evanston indiana was awarded the 6526715 contract the contractor will have approximately 1 yearto cearto complete the work about 11 government and 70 non government workers will be employed to do the work at an estimated 3 million in wages and salaries seepage at navajo dam was first observed during initial filling of the reservoir commissioner
