Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; CUWCD newsletter bureau searches for water in utah the bureau of reclamation is looking for a demonstration project in utah that could have important implications for the future of water in the state reclamation engineers are casting about for a site where they can start storing water underground ever since the pioneers arrived in utah we have dug wells and drawn water from the rich reservoirs of water that flow under the states parched valleys in some areas we now take more water from underground than nature is able to put back lately we have to dig deeper to tap previously untapped sources from the underground reserve nearly every major community in the state including provo orem and those in salt lake county routinely pump large quantities of water from underground every summer with heavy population growth predicted for the next few years demands on our underground water resource willincrease will increase various technologies have been developed to recharge underground aquifers as water laden strata is called but to date they have not been tested under a variety of geologic conditions utah has been selected by reclamation as one of 17 states where demonstration projects will be launched to test the re charging systems now available they range from pouring water down wells to forcing it underground under underpressure pressure in some states so much water has been pumped from underground that the ground has collapsed homes businesses and cars have suddenly slid into a gaping abyss we havent gotten to that state in utah yet but it is time to get serious about recharging charging re we have almost exhausted our good dam sites to create surface reservoirs and we are actively developing those we already depend heavily 0 on n our underground resources and its time we learned to replenish what we take the states water managers have been invited to submit proposals they should be diligent in preparing thoughtful proposals so that we can make the best choice possible for a test thats vital to our future siddoway receives citizen award lawrence Y siddoway former secretary and manager of the uintah water conservancy district was recently presented the bureau of reclamations prestigious citizen award at the colorado river water users associations meeting in las vegas nevada by robert N broadbent assistant secretary for water and science department of interior siddoway retired from the district in january 1986 in presenting the award broadbent praised siddoway for his leadership in the vernal community effort to secure approval of the upper colorado river compact which led to the authorize authoriza A AA ira IRV lra ak 4k 0 A
