Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; CUWCD newsletter central utah project the only water source for time period OREM UTAH while there is plenty of water in utah and the west for utahs needs in the foreseeable future the project of getting it where we need it when we need it with the quality we need is a significant problem that is what the central utah ufah project CUP is all about there is a great deal of water in the colorado river riven biven riverthatwejust that we lust just are not presently able to use the waters of the bear river are filling the greatsalt great salt lake to overflowing without beneficial use but the CUP is the only project presently under way that can provide the water we need in the next generation there has been no new supply of water developed along the wasatch front since the construction of the deer creek reservoir nearly 40 years ago the population of salt lake county has increased from 274000 in 1950 to more than 655000 presently and the newest projections from the utah foundation a private research group are that it will increase to 1099000 in the next 25 years while the CUP has been under development since 1965 and more than 600 million has already been spent the project is only about 40 percent complete and the first water deliveries into salt lake county some 20000 acre feet will not be made until late in 1985 the balance of the 70000 acre feet imported by salt lake county will not be totally delivered until about the end of this century there is some underground water that is unappropriated and there are other small local supplies that can be acquired and converted to municipal and industrial use but these are already being developed and will be needed in addition to the CUP bonneville unit water the CUP project costs which have already been incurred will need to be repaid whether the water is finally brought to use and sold or not local water interests like the salt lake county water conservancy district have constructed their water handling systems to receive the CUP water from the south and deliver it to all parts of the county to change now and bring other waters from another direction would disrupt all of that solid planning the US congress has already authorized the development of the CUP and provided low cost ways of repaying those dollars to try to begin now to get authorization from another major reclamation project and deliver water from the bear river in time to be useful when we need it during the next 25 years is simply not possible undoubtedly the waters of the bear river and those still unused in the colorado will wil wll I 1 be vital to the future of utah as our population continues to grow during the middle years of the next century however the central utah project is the only project which can be counted upon to meet the needs of the wasatch front in the next 25 years 11111t1 1111t 11 ilil fill 1 111 itt ili III pil oil oif ali all oli ap 7p CUWCD water plant to bring treated water to vernal residences the central utah water conservancy district water treatment facility north of vernal is 90 percent complete and water treatment will begin commercially sometime by midsummer mid summer the 15 million gallon a day facility is currently undergoing testing of equipment and installation of the computer controls which are on site the plant will employ four full time employees 16 hours a day seven days a week the plant will be operated automatically eight hours a day construction of the plant began last february contractor is clegg construction of provo utah currently the plant is using water from red fleet reservoir for testing purposes but will tap ashley springs as a water source depending on the need of the areas the plant will serve the plant will serve vernal city jensen and maeser the 78 7.8 78 million plan plant plantwas twas was built from taxes from all 11 counties in the central utah water district it uses a direct filtration method of water treatment delivery to the plant is from an aqueduct built from red fleet reservoir and also a 30 inch water line from vernal citys cites line in dry fork maintenance of the plant is being kept at a minimum to keep the costs of the project down although a main delivery line being installed by the bureau of ot reclamation is not complete danny kofford plant manager said that the delay in the construction of ot the line has not delayed the start up of the plant the plant has the capacity to be expanded to treat 30 million 9 gallons allons per day
