Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; CUWCD newsleta NEW NEWSLET SLETa scheduled to begin in late spring or early summer of 1987 construction st will be completed in two stages stage I 1 will consist of excavation of the dam abutments on the right and left of existing US highway 40 by stripping alluvial materials down to bedrock and stockpiling sand and gravel filter materials for later use traffic will continue to use the existing highway through this 198788 1987 88 construction season during stage 11 II dam fill materials approximately 14.5 145 145 million cubic yards will be placed and traffic will be rerouted on the relocated US highway 40 the dam is scheduled for completion in 1992 most of the labor force for the 400 million construction project is expected to be local residents from wasatch summit salt lake and utah counties construction materials will be purchased mostly within the state jordanelle Jor danelle dam will rise nearly 300 feet above streambed stream bed and have a crest length of approximately 3000 feet the reservoir will impound 320300 acre feet of water about twice the amount in deer creek reservoir and 3068 surface acres approximately 385 more than deer creek water laws protect utahs interest edward W clyde prominent water lawyer stated that the recent decision establishing reestablishing re four million acres in utah as ute indian reservation land will have no impact on the central utah project laws established near the turn of the century protect utahs interest in the water being captured by the central utah project mr clyde indicated that if water rights are litigated the law is clear and well jelled belled and arid arld has been in place since 1908 the question arose when the supreme court recently refused to consider the repeal of a federal court decision reestablishing old boundaries of the uncompahgre and uintah reservations which encompass duchesne county and much of uintah county the lands also encompass much of the area where 2 billion of the central utah project which is being developed to capture much of the water to be used along the wasatch front mr clyde said the rule is that water susceptible to irrigation may be used by the indians but the small ute population probably couldnt use 2 of their alloted share of divertible divertable diver table water central utah water conservancy district cuts 87 budget A 49 4.9 49 million reduction by the central utah water conservancy district board in its 1987 budget was announced by its board of directors recently the 49 4.9 49 million is down from the 1986 budget and is attributed to reserve funds being transferred into the general fund during the current year not making them available for the coming year A total of 1160000 will be transferred next year which is a drop of 5190000 under the 6351000 transferred during the current year finance chairman gerald K maloney indicated that the reserve funds were well depleted the district will be assessing property owners in the twelve counties covered by the district at the rate of .0004 0004 0004 under its new taxing system this amounts to the same tax 4 rate of two mills under the old system water users workshop the utah water users workshop will be held at the holiday inn st george utah march 10 and 11 1987 the association indicated that all interested persons should make their own reservations at the holiday inn in st george and may contact lori johnson at utah state university logan utah 843224105 for information concerning conference registration late reservations will be provided on a space available basis only registration preregistration pre will be 30 registration gi stration at the door is 35 this years program will include ground water quality protection managing farm family stress legal issues relating to aquatic herbicides Herbic ides safe drinking water act well weli weil head and aquifer protection water rights stream alterations change applications reserved rights & public trusts federalstate Federal State dam safety strawberry water users rab r&b hydropower Hydro power on dams west desert pumping CUP jordanelle Jor danelle dam and upper stillwater interisland inter island dikingfarming Diking Farming bay preferred alt ground water quality protection strategies no special womens program is planned this year the banquet will be held the evening of march 11 1987 guest banquet tickets will be 15 sponsors utah state university extension service in cooperation with water users association cia tion utah state department of water rights US bureau of reclamation utah state department of water resources US soil conservation service
