Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; strawberry soldier creek dam constructed to enlarge strawberry reservoir to four times its original capacity was completed in 1973 water is now being stored behind the new dam to ensure the same high quality fishing as in the present strawberry reservoir a f fish ish eradication program was conducted upon completion of the new dam chubs and other undesirable fish were eliminated so that trout would dominate and provide excellent fishing for the thousands expected to frequent the new area environmental issues the national environmental policy act NEPA passed 1 in n 1969 has caused a great deal of concern and delay to the construction of essential projects throughout the united states construction of the central utah project has been virtually stopped since 1971 A brief explanation of the NEPA process for approvals in relation to the bonneville unit of the CUP will help explain the reason for the delays in 19711972 1971 1972 the draft environmental statement for the bonneville unit was prepared then during the month of september 1972 a public hearing was held to allow individuals to express their viewpoints about the statement after this hearing a final draft statement was prepared giving consideration to points referred to in the hearing this revision took almost another year to complete in the late summer of 1973 the completed final environmental statement with written and oral arguments from independent groups was forwarded to the department of interior in washington DC then after nearly two months the statement was approved by secretary morton of the department of the interior and released to the council on environmental quality at the end of the required 30 day period the environmental statement was released from the council on environmental quality the news release followed deseret news september 7 1973 grace reppert CEQ staff member responsible for reviewing the environmental impact statement on the project central utah project told the deseret news this morning that the 30 day review period will end september 9th ath allowing the project to go ahead miss reppert said there was little chance that the council would ask the interior department to add to the impact statement or do anything else to delay work on the project the secretary of interior then authorized the bureau of reclamation to proceed in calling for bids for construction of the currant creek dam east of strawberry reservoir shortly thereafter 4 environmental groups 1 from california 1 from michigan and 2 from new york filed suit in the federal court in salt lake city and seeking contending deficiencies in the environmental statement to stop the US bureau of reclamation from opening bids further construction has been delayed pending the ruling of the court 1 explosive detonated at the new soldier creek dam below strawberry to eradicate fish 4114 2 new soldier creek dam 4 .4 ju 3 plane drop p 0 lyler on during S fish kill at S 0 creek NO f fa f1 i r NO 4 tj smi zvi sms 4 proposed currant creek dam site 10 YR f FINAL ENVIRONM STATEME NEVILLE umit UNIT
