Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; QUESTIONS MOST OFTOASKED oftlaasked A why do we need the central utah project two main reasons exist first water storage capacities must be provided to meet the present water shortages and to prepare for the projected natural growth which is occurring now and will continue to occur the second reason is that it is important we protect utahs colorado river water right before this water is lost to other states much of utah s water now flows out of the state via the green and colorado rivers this water must be put to use in utah before other states begin to use it and become dependent upon it if the lower states such as arizona and california begin to use this water which they desperately need utah will never get it back what Is the bonneville unit and what Is the central utah project the central utah project is a complex water reclamation cla mation project which will capture and wisely use water from uinta mountain streams which now flow into the green and colorado rivers the central utah project is so complex that it has been divided into six units and the bonneville unit is one of these six units five of the six units have been authorized by congress the bonneville unit is the largest of the authorized units and will store and divert a portion of the colorado river water for use along the wasatch front from salt lake county to the sevier basin the other four authorized units are arc ane principally concerned with meeting the water demands of the uintah basin I 1 have heard that utah Is facing A water crisis Is there really A shortage of water yes utah is the second driest state in the country and must be very careful to conserve all its water recently water officials throughout the state have sounded concern because water demands have the available supplies water officials say that high precipitation recently has helped but they warn of water rationing if we have a low precipitation year if we are short of water As officials say why havent I 1 noticed it since an excess of precipitation has fallen the ABOUT BOUT THE CUP AND tle TJO tie tjoanswers TANSWERS ANSWERS last few years the reservoirs have filled up the runoff has lasted longer thanusual than usual and the ground water supplies have been better than usual however when a low precipitation year should come many areas will not have the storage capacity to meet their water needs throughout the year low water years will occur as they have occurred in the past and when this happens the water shortage will be evident to most everyone for water in some areas will have to be rationed has sufficient planning been done so As to protect the environment planning has been going on for more than 25 years and approximately 6 million has been spent thus far on planning alone not all the questions have been answered yet and so planning continues even now the major questions have been answered however and construction of the central utah project should not cause undue harm to the environment As each segment of this complex project nears con sturction sturc tion detailed studies are proposed so as to further protect the environment it will take years to complete the entire central utah project and by then we may have better scientific methods to get more complete answers however every attempt is being made to protect both the environment of man and nature as each individual part of the project is constructed struc ted what Is meant by environmental tradeoffs trade offs an environmental tradeoff trade off is the exchange of one environmental condition for another an example of these tradeoffs trade offs is that we must give up seven miles of stream to enlarge the storage capacity of strawberry reservoir but for those seven miles of stream we get increased recreational value from the reservoir itself and the controlled use of that water downstream during late summer and fall when we need it rather than the flooding in the spring how hovy hosy can such A small number of environ mentalists meritalists menta merita lists stop such A large project the national enviro elviro environmental nmental amental policy act of 1969 required that an environmental statement be prepared before further construction could continue on any federally funded projecl project it has taken consid
