Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; the nearly completed plant has been operating at full capacity processing approximately 36 million gallons of water per day during much of the summer the 9 million facility treats raw water to make it fit for culinary uses in the purification process foreign materials orders foreign tastes and bacterial contamination are eliminated source of water for the plant this summer is is surplus from deer creek reservoir storage high precipitation the last two years has filled deer creek to capacity with the reservoir full those who own the water have been willing to sell some of it to salt lake county during drier years or as population grows salt lake county will need to look elsewhere to fulfill water demands when the bonneville unit of the central utah project is completed the plant will have a firm supply of water the bonneville unit has been delayed recently meeting new environmental requirements quire ments of the 1970 national environmental policy act this delay is not critical at the present time because high precipitation has provided surpluses to salt lake county however if dry years come before vital features of the central utah project are completed salt lake county along with many other central utah communities will face critical water shortages the central utah project is a serie serle series serles of dams canals tunnels and aqueducts which store and divert high runoff from the south slopes of the uinta mountains streams along these mountains run extremely high in the spring when the winter snow melts and then nearly dry up the remainder of the year with dams and reservoirs to store this high runoff many areas will benefit from the new source the water presently runs out of utah and on to arizona nevada and california and the pacific ocean because the facilities arent yet built to store it here 7 the seven story building which houses chemical tanks filters and fixtures necessary to the purification process stands as a formidable monument overlooking the valley vailey V 400m pipes and fittings to and from the filters where water is purified create a maze known as the pipe gallery callery emna FREE amna ifa if7 4 ad 7d 2 inspectors check the large tanks which stand 3 stories high and house approximately 40000 gallons of chemicals used in the purification processes
