Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; St strawberry rowberry reservoir strawberry reservoir long recognized as utahs finest fishing hole is to be enlarged to four times its present capacity soldier creek dam now under construction will raise the water level of the reservoir about 45 feet when filled more than one million acre feet of water will be held captive in the enlar eniar enlarged I 1 ed reservoir later to be released for beneficial use strawberry reservoir when enlarged will become the heart of the bonneville unit of the central utah project pam aam soldier creek dam will be on strawberry river about seven miles downstream from the existing strawberry dam the 254 foot high dam is to be a compacted earth fill structure two outlet tunnels are being constructed at the dam the lower one will be used to divert strawberry river water during construction st the upper one 132 feet higher will be used to release water with high oxygen content for fish preservation in the river below the dam both outlet tunnels may be used for the control of floods or to evacuate the reservoir when necessary storage of water behind soldier creek dam will probably begin in about 1973 A separate body of water will initially be formed behind the new dam until its water level approaches the level in the existing strawberry reservoir then the original strawberry dam will be breached to permit free water movement and one large reservoir will be created most of the existing fishing cabin sites around the reservoir will be inundated when the enlarged reservoir is completely filled soldier creek dam is being constructed by burgess construction company of fairbanks alaska under contract with the bureau of reclamation nai Nal mai multiple naltiple tiple purpose the original strawberry reservoir was constructed primarily to provide water for irrigation use in utah county however the strawberry reservoir enlargement will serve the following important purposes municipal and industrial use irrigation power production flood control fish and wildlife and recreation rea tion strawberry sfrawberry tunnel syar tunnel w water diverted from streams in the uinta basin will be collected by the strawberry aqueduct for long time storage in the enlarged strawberry reservoir it will then be released through the new syar tunnel as needed for multipurpose use along the heavily populated wasatch front in addition to being an outstanding fishing lake strawberry reservoir is also the primary source of eggs from rainbow and native cutthroat trout used in fish hatcheries in the state the enlarged reservoir will accommodate considerably more fish sfrawberry strawberry aqueducf aqueduct recreaflon areas U S 40 soldier cr dam m ing and according to state officials the quality of the fishing is expected to remain excellent A continuous stream flow in strawberry river below the new dam will assure continued good stream fishing extensive recreational facilities to be provided at the reservoir will include marinas boat ramps camping and picnicking areas motels restaurants trailer villages tent sites and roads and trails for riding hiking and bicycling federal and state approved water and sanitary facilities will also be supplied
