Relation Central Utah Project; Western Waters Digital Library; A COMPLEX OF DAMS CANALS AND TUNNE TUNNELS LS the bonneville unit will increase useable water supplies in the uinta and bonneville basins by means of regulatory storage works and conveyance facilities UINTA BASIN starvation reservoir with a total capacity of 167300 acre feet is the first feature of the bon bonneville neville unit under construction it will be formed by a dam on strawberry river about 3 miles upstream from duchesne to store surplus flows of the duchesne and strawberry rivers water will be released from starvation reservoir as needed to supplement present irrigation supplies in the duchesne river area and to replace water presently used in that area which will be diverted to the bonneville basin crossing the high southern flank of the uintas cintas the strawberry aqueduct about 37 miles long will intercept the flows of rock creek and seven other streams upper stillwater reservoir on rock creek and currant creek reservoir on currant creek will serve as equalizing reservoirs along the aqueduct water will flow by gravity through the aqueduct to the enlarged strawberry reservoir soldier creek dam about 7 miles downstream from the present strawberry dam will increase the strawberry reservoir capacity from 283000 to 870000 acre feet bonneville BASIN transmountain Trans mountain diversion the new 65 mile long pressurized syar tunnel will divert water from strawberry reservoir through the divide between the uinta and bonneville basins approximately 197600 acre feet of water will be released annually through the tunnel including 61000 acre feet of normal yield from the existing strawberry reservoir jordanelle JOR DANELLE DAM ak sent awb6try reservol reservor Res ervol A SOLDIER CREEK DAM WW plants will have a total generating capacity of about 133000 kilowatts part of the power produced at these plants will be used for project pumping and the remainder will be marketed for commercial consumption to help repay project costs use of water water released during the nonirrigation season will be st stored ored stoned in four reservoirs utah lake the 51500 acre foot capacity hayes reservoir on diamond fork the enlarged mona reservoir and sevier bridge reservoir for later use during the irrigation season the existing sevier bridge reservoir will be adequate to store and reregulate the project water diverted to the sevier river basin summer season releases through the powerplants power plants will be used directly for irrigation the 32 mile long wasatch aqueduct the 24 mile long mona nephi canal and the 27 mile long nephi sevier canal will convey irrigation water from the powerplants power plants and reservoirs to lands in utah and juab counties and the sevier river basin municipal and industrial water released from jordanelle Jor danelle reservoir will be distributed in northern utah and salt lake counties by the jordan aqueduct municipal and industrial clu du ciu strial water released from strawberry reservoir will be used from springville Spring ville to nephi utah lake utah lake is a vital component of the bonneville unit goshen and provo bays will be separated from the main body of utah lake by dikes to reduce evapotranspiration evapotranspi ration losses goshen bay dike will be 5.4 54 54 miles long and provo bay dike will be 6.5 65 65 miles long lands in provo bay will be drained and reclaimed for agricultural use A canal will be constructed to divert strearnflows streamflows stream flows around provo bay to the lake goshen bay will be turned into a waterfowl management area much of the project water collected in utah lake will be used for irrigation of lands along the lake shore some of the project water in utah lake will be exchanged upstream on the provo river for water that presently flows into the lake the replaced provo river water will be stored in the new jordanelle Jor danelle reservoir to be constructed struc ted about 6 miles above heber some of thewater toewater the water stored in jordanelle jorclanelle Jor danelle reservoir will be used for supplemental ir rigation irrigation in the heber area but the greater part will be used for municipal and industrial purposes in northern utah and salt lake counties
