Spencer down to Lee's Ferry and back again, but the big steamboat was not a success. She drew too much water to operate in the river at low level and the story goes that she used all the coal she could haul down to make the trip back up, a mere 28 miles, which required two days. To tow a barge up was out of the question. On the last trip down, 30 tons of coal were piled around on the deck and when this was delivered the Charles H. Spencer was tied up at Lee's Ferry and...
