The Powell expedition, camped (nc. 83) at the mouth of the canyon October 18, 1871 to take pictures of Sentinel Rock (Historical site 16), named the Creek after the rock. Dellenbaugh (1926, 149) says they named it Sentinel Creek, but it appears as Sentinel Rock Creek on the maps issued by the Powell Survey (see the Preliminary Map No. 1, Map C in Dellenbaugh, 1926).
