On the 1869 trip Powell applied the name Mound Canyon to the length of canyon stretching from the mouth of the Dirty Devil to the mouth of the San Juan, and the name Monument Canyon to the length extending from the San Juan to the mouth of the Paria River or Lee's Ferry.
