Escalante noted in his diary, November 7, 1776, as the Spaniards left their camp at the ford they "ascended from the bed of the river by a long ridge which was not very difficult." When they reached the top at the southern base of a high butte overlooking the canyon at mile 37.8, they "turned south-southeast following a well-beaten trail" which took them to Navajo...
