A few days later somewhere on the trail near Moenkopi Wash the party was stopped by hostile Navajos and George Albert Smith, Jr. was killed by them November 2. Unable to recover the victim's body, Hamblin returned to the settlements by the same route. With 20 men he was sent back during the winter to recover the remains of young Smith. Again, the river...
