Description Biographical/Historical note: Samuel Ruggles Aiken was born on October 28, 1803 in Hardwick, Massachusetts to John and Sarah Aiken. Before 1869, Samuel Ruggles Aiken headed to the Western United States with fellow pioneers and settled in Utah. In 1871, he was the recorder of city council minutes for Spring City, Utah which had been incorporated in 1870 from its original name of Spring Town. While Aiken was a member of the city council, he also worked on his farm with his family. He later... The diary, created by Samuel Ruggles Aiken in January 1871, contains handwritten meeting minutes of the city council in Spring City, Utah. Other recorders, being John R. Baxter, John F. Allred, and S. Burdich, continued the minutes to the end of the diary, finishing on April 1886. Items of business in the council include the operation of the town, placement and maintenance of ditches, and concerns over water rights.
