Abstract Vine of the Dead is part one of a novel following Daphne Oliveira, a young American woman who is coping with a failing marriage and the loss of a child while living in Brazil with her husband, a translator for the American Consulate in Recife. The story explores what it means to live as an outsider in a foreign country and begins to explore the difficulties faced by Brazil's lower class. With every label she'd previously applied to herself challenged by tragedy, Daphne flounders, ending part one on the verge of beginning a journey that will thrust her from the comforts of her expatriate lifestyle into the belly of Brazil, testing her strength and ultimately offering her redemption.
