Abstract Since the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Women Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Core Journal List was last updated in 2008, the field of Women Studies has expanded to include Gender, Sexuality and Queer studies along with other subfields, rendering the list incomplete and unreflective of the discipline’s breadth. To update the list, WGSS Collections committee members distributed a seven question survey to learn which journals are considered core by those who teach, research and work in feminist, gender, queer, sexuality, trans, woman, women and womanist studies.
The Qualtrics hosted survey was distributed to relevant email lists during fall 2014 and winter 2015. Three questions asked for titles of journals used and the remaining four asked about respondents work status and institutional programs. The 222 respondents shared the top five journals they consider core to their current research along with the top five they consider core to courses they regularly teach. Respondents also indicated which journals they regularly read, their primary status and research areas, the department or center they primarily work in and which degrees related to WGSS their institution offers. Analysis by degree, undergraduate and graduate, can help librarians better understand which journals are must haves to support women studies and related programs.
Going forward the WGSS Collections Committee will combine survey results with other metrics to update the Core Journal List. Once compiled, librarians can then assess and benchmark their libraries' holdings to the updated Core Journal list. It is hoped that the list will support libraries wishing to expand their holdings to support their institutions women, gender, sexuality, queer and related programs.
