Abstract | Selkie Theory is a collection of poems written by Maya Polan in partial fulfillment of a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Oregon State University, completed on April 20, 2015. The collection explores public landscapes, from national parks to pop culture, and private ones, from family lineage to tarot readings. The poems all mine language--relying heavily on conventional and invented poetic forms, sonic repetition, literary and mythic source material, even the alphabet--to align a range of seemingly disparate subject matters. But ultimately, what most aligns the array set forth in Selkie Theory goes beyond this juxtaposition. Rather, it’s the voice behind the poems, one of forceful scrutiny, of inquiry, which ultimately constructs a narrative--not of one story, or one speaker, and not without elliptical, associative, and lyric tendencies, but a narrative nonetheless--on the potency and power of examination. |
