Abstract The aim of this thesis is to use various forms of the creative nonfiction essay to engage a historical discussion on Alabama, particularly the idea of the historical outsider. My role as the essayist in this discussion is to reckon with the history that has been passed down to me as an Alabama native, while exploring the opportunity I have to craft that history as an essayist.
The bulk of the linked collection is in five major essays. These essays pull together my influences as a writer while situating and characterizing Alabama in the historical discussion. The rest of the collection is in four flash interstitial essays, each spotlighting a figure from Alabama’s history. While the major essays vary in length and structure, the interstitial essays each appropriate the five-paragraph essay form to experiment with how that form can be stretched and crafted beyond its limitations.
