Abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate underlying factors in physical activity (PA) of families with children with high functioning autism (HFA). Six families participated in the study. A mixed method research design was used to gather data on PA of youth with HFA from a family systems perspective. Data were gathered in three steps, including initial estimation of PA using RT3 monitors, parent responses to Q-sort items, and follow-up interviews with parents. Findings revealed that children with HFA varied in levels of MVPA during the study period (12-58 minutes per day). Parent PA levels were low during data collection. Interviews with parents revealed that a lack of social skills hinders the PA of children with ASD. Parents highlighted the value of adequate skills and knowledge of basic sports in promoting the social skills of their children. Parents in this particular sample also indicated that safety was an issue. Some of the challenges that restrict PA participation of the broader family unit included lack of support from family members, physical and emotional demands of child care, and financial demands of the child with ASD. Furthermore, parents explained that they like participating in PA as a family. Families of children with ASD also experienced challenges with school professionals and in the community. Parents indicated that some teachers, teacher aides, and special education teachers do not have knowledge about autism and lack training. In community settings, parents often felt isolated and socially rejected because of perceived poor parenting when their children acted out. One final concern parents discussed was a lack of opportunities to be PA in the community. |
