| Abstract | In 2009 the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) established the Social Sciences Research Coordination Program (SSRCP) to increase industry and government understanding and uses of social sciences in marine and fisheries management. Since that time a number of projects have been funded and promoted by the FRDC through the Program, ranging from a simple audit of all social sciences research undertaken in Australia between 1990 and 2010, to an examination of the values that underpin public attitudes and perceptions of fisheries management. The projects (some 24) cover the disciplines of historical, economic, ethnographic, demographic and sociological research approaches and methodologies. This paper presents a summary of the work championed by the FRDC and the themes of endeavour it has supported to date, and the future directions that are currently envisaged. It seeks to explore the rational for those directions and invite debate around the gaps that may remain from the existing research, and currently envisaged avenues of ongoing and future research. Specifically, it touches upon the urgent need for the integration of social science (in all its forms) research with other forms of knowledge (specifically ecological) and the governance decision making processes that confound decision making bodies, and which currently often become politicised as a consequence. |
