Abstract | Youth corrections teachers are an under-researched group of individuals who have much to lend to the discussion surrounding youth corrections including teaching methodologies, challenges, and benefits. This report summarizes the available academic literature of the characteristics of effective youth corrections teachers in comparison with teachers who work in traditional public schools as well as effective interventions, educational effectiveness in prisons, and challenges teachers may face. Qualitative analysis of interviews with eight Oregon youth corrections teachers was conducted to determine the benefits and challenges the youth corrections teachers face. Benefits include security, great local administration, and the ability to introduce effective educational interventions to improve youths’ lives. Challenges include high levels of special education, large varieties of academic level within classrooms, interactions with Oregon Youth Authority staff and the necessary implementation of the teaching methodology Academic Choice. Findings surrounding contract uncertainty are also discussed and a series of policy recommendations are made to address the challenges youth corrections teachers face. |
