Abstract | In recent years, simulated laboratory experiences have become more prevalent in educational curricula. These simulations, called virtual labs, can enable learning in ways that are not limited by physical constraints. The development of virtual labs is often ad hoc, resulting in unnecessary, repetitive work. The purpose of this thesis is to create a reusable software architecture for virtual lab development. The model for the general architecture is the Virtual Bioreactor, a virtual lab developed at Oregon State University. In the process of reconstructing this virtual lab, the original software structure is analyzed for components that could apply to other virtual labs. Next, virtual labs from Sweden and India are compared to the Virtual Bioreactor so that new design ideas can be considered. Once these perspectives have been discussed, the generic architecture is proposed. It is designed to be used with virtual labs that require instructors to approve student proposals, student use to be recorded, or those with complex mathematical simulations. The implementation of the architecture is in progress. Once finished and applied to the Virtual Bioreactor, the architecture should be validated with other virtual labs. |
