| Abstract | Although U.S. Latin@s are more affected by major depressive disorder than non-Latin@ whites, they are less likely to utilize mental health services. The purpose of this project is to create a children’s book that promotes the utilization of mental health services among U.S. Latin@s with major depressive disorder. This book is targeted at children aged 7-12 and is available in a bilingual version to provide accessible reading material independent of acculturation or education levels. Ana’s Family is Happy Again or La familia de Ana está feliz de nuevo is about a Latina girl named Ana who, after learning about major depressive disorder through a series of experiences and poignant questions, encourages her uncle to seek care. She learns the difference between sadness and depression, is familiarized with the availability of mental health services, and grows to understand that depression is not shameful or a sign of weakness in difficult circumstances but is a medical condition. By normalizing depression, questioning existing explanatory models, describing a biomedical model, and providing information about available resources, this book aims to promote open discussion about a stigmatized area of health to overcome the internal barriers preventing U.S. Latin@s from utilizing mental health services for major depressive disorder. |
