Abstract The newest pilot project at Tarangire National Park (TAR) is Income Generating
Programs (IGP) where community groups organize themselves around an activity that
earns income. TAR initiated the project by paying for ten members from each of the three
existing community groups on the park’s northern end and fifteen members each from the
two existing community groups in the park’s southern end to attend a business class on
capacity building from September 24-29, 2012.
This study analyzed the immediate impacts associated with the class on the three
groups in the park’s northern end. The metrics used to measure impact were group
information sharing by class attendants, changes in business practices, changes in
opinions of TAR’s management, and changes in attitudes towards living next to TAR.
These results were procured through qualitative case studies based on interviews and
focus groups (n=51).
It was hypothesized and supported that class attendants shared the information
within their group, initial changes to business practices were made, villager opinions of
TAR became more positive, and that attitudes towards living next to TAR improved.
