Abstract The project objective was to design an ion exchange column to remove 71 ppm strontium from a 21,300 gal/day toxic waste stream. Calcium was used as a stand-in for strontium. A Ca2+ test kit was used to create a standard curve for effluent Ca2+ concentration determination. Resin exchange capacity was estimated from the breakthrough curve generated by pumping 640 ppm Ca2+ solution down the column at 100 mL/min, collecting 15 samples over 45 minutes, and measuring effluent Ca2+ concentration of each sample. Regeneration efficiency was estimated by pumping 6000 ppm NaCl solution down the column at 150 mL/min, collecting 12 samples over 40 minutes, and measuring effluent Ca2+ concentrations. The Ca2+ test kit was unsuitable for assessing complete Sr2+ removal. Resin exchange capacity was 2.5 eq/L and regeneration efficiency was 87%. The proposed ion exchange column system requires 3 columns with diameters of 40 cm, column heights of 2.3 m, and resin heights of 1.7 m. The system requires 6,400 kg NaCl/yr to regenerate the resin.
