Abstract The project objective was to design an ion exchange treatment system capable of removing 71 mg/L Sr2+ from a waste stream of 21,300 GPD. Experiments determined virgin resin capacity (2.55 eq/L), regeneration efficiency (61%) using a 6000 ppm NaCl solution, annual salt requirement (86 metric tons), and the capabilities of an API divalent cation test kit. Ca2+ solution was pumped down a 42.5 cm tall, 1.3 cm diameter column packed with 30 ml Ionac 249 resin at 100 ± 1.2 ml/min. Samples were tested with the API divalent cation test kit as a time-series every 3 min for 45 min. The divalent test kit was incapable since levels could only be detected in 21 ppm increments. The ion exchange treatment system proposed has 3 columns, 4.2 m tall, 42 cm diameter, requiring daily regeneration.
