Abstract There is a knowledge gap concerning the outcomes of early adolescent sexual initiation (ASI). In particular, the influence of early ASI upon adult attachment is unknown. A multiple regression study was conducted to address this knowledge gap. Adult partner/spouse attachment was the criterion variable, and the predictor variables included both ASI and factors known to interact with early ASI (i.e., age of menarche, neuroticism, extraversion, and socioeconomic status). The participants were female heterosexual undergraduates who had experienced: (a) consensual first coitus during adolescence, (b) an end to a relationship with their first coital partner, and (c) dating or marrying another person. ASI was not found to be a predictor of female adult attachment to a partner or spouse. Clinical and research implications of the results were discussed.
