Abstract Characterization of the enzymatic activity of the ionocyte
(mitochondria-rich cell) in the gill epithelium of Oncorhynchus
tshawytscha was explored.
1. A method for estimating the enzymatic activity per cell for
tissues is described.
2. The DNA content per cell for nucleated erythrocytes (O. tshawytscha) was determined to be 9.47 x 10⁻¹² gms.
3. The total DNA content of gill and liver tissue was determined
for fish of various sizes and the cell populations per gm of
tissue were calculated.
4. Experimental requirements for the enzyme assay of gill
and liver mitochondrial fractions are described.
5. A threefold increase in gill succinate-cytochrome c reductase
activity was found for gill epithelium functioning in the marine
environment compared to the freshwater environment whereas there
was no change in liver succinate-cytochrome c reductase levels.
