| Abstract | It is well known that every Banach space with a Schauder basis is separable. However, whether the converse of the above statement is true is not known. It is therefore the purpose of this thesis to investigate the question of under what conditions an arbitrary, separable, Banach space has a basis. Some interesting criteria are developed for the existence of a basis in a Banach space. Some conditions are also developed for the existence of a basis in conjugate spaces. |
