Abstract A method is developed for calculating the reactivity
worth of the heavy water coolant of the Plutonium
Recycle Test Reactor (PRTR). The coolant reactivity
worth is determined by calculating the effective multiplication
constant of the reactor core with and without
the coolant in given process tubes. The calculational
method includes a method for calculating the resonance
integrals for PRTR circular 19-rod cluster fuel elements
based on experimental resonance integral data for
single UO₂ fuel rods and hexagonal 19-rod clusters of
UO₂ fuel rods.
The calculational method is evaluated by comparing
the theoretical results with experimental coolant reactivity
measurements previously obtained at the PRTR.
The accuracy of the calculational method is shown to
be within the experimental accuracy of the cross
section data by calculating the reactivity change produced
by the change in each individual multigroup
cross section.
