Abstract | An interactive man-hybrid computer algorithm is presented for searching a set of dynamic system parameters which effect a compromise between performance characteristics and give satisfactory system sensitivity without any analytical calculations or a priori indices of performance. The parameter search is conducted in a real time design situation in which the computer algorithm provides interfacing functions between the man and the hybrid computer. The interfacing functions include the interpretation and translation of preferential cues into appropriate parameter changes, visual presentation of time response information, operational messages alerting the man of system events, and data outputs. The preferential cues are given by the man in response to his critical examination and judgment of the visual time response information. Experimental results for both linear and nonlinear systems are given along with a discussion of experimental findings on the judgments a man can make with consistency about time response characteristics. |
