Note Research Paper
Abstract Sea lice are natural parasites, and are spread between wild salmon stocks and farmed salmon. Studies indicate that sea lice from salmon farms not only cause economic losses to salmon aquaculture producers, but also affect other marine resources. Currently one of the most controversial debates over sea lice from salmon farms is that they potentially pose a significant threat to wild salmon fisheries. Therefore, this research will address two main questions: 1) do sea lice from salmon farms have ecological and economic effects on wild salmon stocks and fisheries? and 2) if they do, then what will the economic effects be? In order to answer these two questions, we will develop and apply ecological-economic models based on the dynamics of wild salmon stocks and sea lice. We will also incorporate the management strategies for wild salmon fisheries and farmed salmon in the models. This study will use pink and chum salmon stocks and fisheries in the Broughton Archipelago, British Columbia (BC) as case studies. The focus will be on juvenile migration stages. This study should fill some knowledge gaps in the understanding of the interactions between both wild and farmed salmon as well as provide some insights for policy makers to develop or improve regulations associated with disease problems in general and sea lice problems in particular. This study will also present some new perspectives on the sea lice debate and future development of salmon aquaculture in BC
