Abstract For several years, the profitability of farming in the Columbia Basin has been diminishing, as consistently low grain prices have not kept pace with increases in farming costs. The costs of labor, fuel, machinery, fertilizer, pesticides, transportation, accounting, and brokerage fees have combined to cause many small grain producers to look for new sources of income and ways to reduce input costs. This publication explores possibilities for new crops
in the Columbia Basin. Crops discussed include, but are not limited to, oilseeds, food, forage, seeds and stems for revegetation, and crops that enrich the soil and/or reduce the threat of disease to primary crops.
