Note This document marks the beginning of a long struggle for Oregon natural resource managers to find the best time to open the crab season. The time of crab molting is highly variable, and it is hard to determine the best time (firm shells, full of meat) to start the commercial fishing season. Reports on crab condition – the number of soft-shelled crabs – for late July/early August, 1948. Lists fishing boats and numbers of pots fished for Newport, Winchester Bay, Coos Bay and Port Orford.
