Abstract The main purpose of this report was to draw together in one place, for the first time, all
available information on trace contaminant levels in sediment, water, and biota from Oregon in
the hope that sufficient data could be gathered to identify statistically significant geographic
and temporal trends within the state. A secondary purpose was to begin the process of
answering the question "Of what biological importance are these observed levels of
contamination?" Some indication as to the relative ecological importance or impact of
contamination is desired. Because essentially no information on pathological manifestations of
pollution stress in Oregon was encountered, this latter goal was addressed by comparison
between observed contaminant levels in Oregon and appropriate Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) or Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) criteria, and by comparison with levels
observed in areas of known contamination or with results of laboratory bioassay studies.
