Description This report is the Professional Project report of Kelly A. Bitner, submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Water Resources degree at the University of New Mexico (January 2001). On June 22, 2000 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a new drinking water standard for arsenic. The proposed enforceable standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL) for arsenic is 5 micrograms/Liter (μg/L) which would replace the existing standard of 50 μg/L. This report describes an estimate of the costs of compliance with a lower arsenic MCL in New Mexico that is based on cost estimates for community water systems affected by the proposed standard.
