| Description | (e.) Excavation of canal prism.—Almost the only excavating done was at points above the upper guard-lock. From the canal prism proper there were taken 1,733 cubic yards of selected gravel for use in filling the core of the protection wall so that a tramway might be laid along the top of the wall, and 139 cubic yards for filling behind the side wall on the left of the canal.
