Scanned images saved as 16 bit grayscale tiffs. 326.66 kb 8 bit - Gray Gamma 2.2 - greyscale Omnipage 14 used to OCR 8 bit tiffs and generate text files for full text access. 16 bit grayscale and 48>24 RGB color tiffs edited in Photoshop CS 8.0: cropped, rotated, reduced in size, levels adjusted, grayscale bit depth reduced to 8 and JPEGs created.
Description MONUMENTAL RAPIDS, SNAKE RIVER, 40 MILES ABOVE ITS MOUTH The river is here 1,500 feet wide, and the rapid is formed by a rocky reef on the right bank 800 feet wide, which is prolonged from its lower end by a long gravel bar to the opposite shore. At low stage the reef is covered with water at an average depth of 22 inches.
