Description | GERVAIS SLOUGH, about 18 miles below Salem, is now the only channel at low water, the crooked arm formerly the principal channel, known as Biterman's Bend, having become closed by drift and gravel-bars. During the past winter the floods stripped the vegetation from the lower end of the island, and caused a great deal of erosion at the same point; the next high water will probably complete the removal of this tongue of land, and greatly improve the river here.
