Description | Corps of Engineers.-These defenses consist of Fort Stevens, on the south side, and three detached earthen barbette batteries at Cape Disappointment, on the north side of the entrance. They were built during the late war, and the materials used in their construction being those chiefly used in temporary works, they require frequent repairs. The revetments of all the interior slopes and traverses, and the timbers of the magazines at Cape Disappointment, are rotten and fallen in many places.... |
